A Congenial Cabaret Show Continues A Warm Tradition
Torrey Pines Christian Church, May 10
Guest Quartets, California Crossroads and Affinity excited the crowd.
PCH wowed the crowd with a surprise rendition of Boot Scootin' Boogie, cowboy hats and all.
The menu of Antipasto, Bolognese Italian Sausage Lasagna, Roasted Vegetable Lasagna, Italian Style Spinach and Mushroom Salad, Bread with Roasted Garlic Butter, Home Made Italian Cookies (Zaletti, Mostaccoli, Anisette Biscotti), Lemonade, Coffee, and Tea, prepared by shrewd, economic, masterful chef Frank Borik contributed to that warm, fuzzy feeling of contentment and family, and it was delicious, too.

PCH Thanks Bob Baker and Operation Homefront
Mission Valley, March 20
A surprise party was held at the headquarters of Bob Baker Auto Group, in appreciation of their generous donation (see below). Bob Demers arranged to have Bob Baker present for a thank you from a PCH quartet, singing the Bob Baker Auto Group jingle. It was also a surprise for the Operation Homefront attendees who were serenaded Singing Valentine style. They thought they were there just to thank Bob Baker. From left: Bob Baker, Jae Marciano, OH-SD President, Bob Demers, Kirin Macapugay, Dir. Ops., Andrew Eisen, Trisha De La Paz, Dir. Dev., Steve Bates, and Jerry Kent.
PCH Sings Valentines for Operation Homefront
San Diego County, CA, February 13-14
This was our first year of delivering free Singing Valentines to relatives of deployed military personnel. With a generous donation from Bob Baker Auto Group, PCH presented our offering to Operation Homefront, who contacted the USS Nimitz. Anticipating the over 300 responses, they had wisely billed it as a drawing. We delivered to about 30 surprised families. We also delivered another 45 presents to loved ones around the county. See highlights.

PCH Says Farewell to Our Dear Friend Dave Miller
Escondido, September 22
|
We are very sad to report to all of you that our dear friend Dave Miller passed away September 16. Dave had been hospitalized over the weekend and died late Sunday evening. Dave's wife Sue wants all of youto know how much your thoughts and prayers meant to her and the family during Dave's illness. Please continue to remember the family in your prayers. |
| Dave loved his barbershop hobby and cared deeply for his friends that shared a passion for barbershop harmony. He was a talented singer, show production man and script writer. No doubt, he is already working on a draft for the "heavenly" Christmas show featuring all our barbershop brothers and sisters that have preceded him. |
PCH Part of Summer Jazz At The Moonlight
Moonlight Amphitheater,Vista, July 23
On a beautiful summer night at the Moonlight Amphitheater in Vista, the audience was treated to a wonderful evening of reminiscence between the turn of two centuries, as part of the Summer Jazz At The Moonlight series sponsored by the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame. Feedback indicated that the hosts and audience were surprised and delighted by a new barbershop experience.
The day began with an appearance by a chorus ensemble and director Kim Hulbert on KUSI TV to promote the show. That evening, the program intermixed chapter quartets and small ensembles with PCH and many members of the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines, starting with old time barbershop favorites: Lida Rose, Coney Island Baby, and Old Kentucky Home. |

|
The repertoire moved on to later eras to include favorites like It Had To Be You, Love Is Just Around The Corner, and Blue Moon. The headliners, Ready Willing and Mabel (Mabel is their microphone), a mixed quartet, enthralled the audience with a variety of a cappella renditions in the jazz genre. The chorus closed with patriotic favorites, including an audience sing-along to God Bless America. |
Cabaret Show Another Entertainment and Sellout Success
Torrey Pines Christian Church, June 30
Once again, our annual Cabaret feast and entertainment was a resounding success. Chef Frank Borik even topped his 2006 Barbeque spread with his delicious Luau, including Huli Huli Chicken and Kahlua Pork, pineapple chutney, coconut rice and Asian-style coleslaw, finishing off with pineapple right-side-up cake. The 300-seat house was essentially sold out two weeks before, for the third year in a row.
In addition to a great meal, our fans were first serenaded by strolling quartets, then treated to the music of the chorus, chapter quartets (Added Attraction, Splash, HIT and California Crossroads), and other chapter ensembles. |
 |

|
The zany antics of our headliner quartet, Metropolis, had the audience rolling in the aisles. Not only are they International Contest medalists, but they have performed their hysterical routines in over 27 different states and several countries. Join us at next year’s event, but get your tickets early. |
California Crossroads wins 2007 San Diego Fair A Cappella Contest

 |
Buddy Yarnell (T), Les Weiser (L), Larry Thorpe (Bs), and Pete Hensley (Br) won the small group contest ($500 + trophy), the Audience Favorite memento, and the overall prize (another $1000 + trophy). They did NOT win the young group trophy (all 18 or under), because they're older than dirt - they have 185 years of barbershop experience among them.
The overtone on I'm Sitting On Top Of The World almost sounded like feedback - it screamed!!! The audience went wild.

Judging was based on 30% Musicality, 30% Rhythm, Tuning, and Ensemble Blending, 20% Creativity and Originality of Arrangement, 10% Style and Showmanship, and 10% Audience Enjoyment.
The Royals, a 5-man Doo-Wop group with Bryan Soland singing first tenor as a sub, finished third in the small group category. Way to go guys. |

We were proud to host these fine examples of Youth In Harmony, who visited 9 schools stimulating students with their singing and style. Paul Girard, YIH Chairman, housed and escorted them. Clinicians, who accompanied the Boys to the schools and explained the basics of barbershop, included Kim Hulbert, director of PCH and San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines (SDSA), Kathleen Hansen, director of Sun Harbor Chorus and assistant director of SDSA, Mike Lawton, baritone of 1998 International Champions, Revival, Royce Ferguson, tenor of Revival and director of Westminster Chorus, and John Hulbert, director of Palomar-Pacific Music Men. They also were our guests on a Youth In Harmony show. They went on to Phoenix for more school visits, then to Albuquerque, more schools and the BHS Mid-Winter convention. (More) |

Holiday Show Creates Prognostication?
The Neurosciences Institute, December 16

In a break from the past, PCH put on a scripted Holiday Show to the great delight of our audience. The theme was “Almost Home For The Holidays”. The story was about getting stranded in Denver International Airport on Christmas Eve. Weary travelers learn the Secret of Christmas in vignettes of poignant personal stories, and hilarious sketches of holiday spirit. A stressful situation is made bearable and enjoyable by understanding, camaraderie and, of course, songs in the barbershop style. Was it fateful that within the next few weeks, snow storms closed Denver TWICE? (Credits)

San Jose, CA, October 7
With great enthusiasm, PCH took the stage with our International Contest package. But, unfortunately, we hit some bumps, and finished out of the running for the wildcard berths. We will take this as an opportunity to hone our skills in 2007 to get back in contention.

PCH Sings National Anthem for the Padres
Petco Park, July 17
 |
We were proud to be invited to sing the Star Spangled Banner at this home game with the Philly's. Perhaps we inspired the Padres to win 8-6. Included among
the 30,000 Padres fans were 140 PCH followers who were there to cheer us on. Having just returned from a successful engagement at the Barbershop Harmony Society international convention, PCH was no stranger to singing before a large audience. Judging from the ovation at the end of the National Anthem, PCH scored about a "98". |
PCH Finishes 19th at International
Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN, July 7
| We had tremendous fun doing our new contest package. The new up-tune, "Strike Up The Band" arranged by Joe Johnson and choreographed by Cindy Hansen, was exciting, and the reprise of "Once Upon A Time" was heart-felt, as well as melodious. The involvement of the chorus was evident in both songs in their contrasting ways. We received fabulous feedback from friends, fans, and strangers alike. The performance will be warmly remembered and serve as incentive and experience for climbing higher in Denver next year. |

CHP was second in the College contest, with a score that tied the fourth place Division quartet. Not only did HIT win the Novice contest, they came within 20 points of qualifying for District. Top notch!
Spring Fling! Was A Marvelous Experience

PCH shared the stage with the wonderful San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International for a special day of singing. Spring Fling! was performed at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on April 22 at 2:30 and 7:30. We sang four songs together: You're Just In Love, Dream Lover, It's A Sin To Tell A Lie, and Lida Rose/Dream Of Now and each chorus performed a set in their respective acts. The show featured the Sweet Adelines' Queens of Harmony, a cappella Gold, and five competing quartets: HIT!, SPLASH, MOTIF, California Harmony Project, and Barber-Que Sauce, the second place winner in the recent FWD High School Quartet contest.

Pacific
Coast Harmony Takes 2nd Place at FWD Fall Contest!
PCH & PCQ leave the audience buzzing!
Oct. 4th 2003 – Bakersfield, CA
On Saturday October 4th La Jolla’s Pacific Coast Harmony
competed for the first time in the Far Western District Chorus Contest,
defeating last year’s chorus champions and narrowly missing the
first place title. After a little more than a year together, PCH, under
the combined musical leadership of Kim Hulbert and Royce Ferguson, sent
37 singers who commanded the Bakersfield contest stage, sending a message
to all those in attendance that the new chorus from La Jolla is for
real.
The two-song
competition set included the chorus’ signature song, “Sentimental
Gentleman from Georgia,” and the ever popular “All The Way.”
Not only
did the chorus sing beautifully, it also looked great in new black tuxedos
from A Better Deal Tuxedos (www.abdtuxedo.com) and hand-made red vests
by Sandi Aramian of the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International.
Pacific
Coast Quartet represented the La Jolla Chapter in the quartet competition.
The quartet’s tenor was unable to attend at the last minute due
to a family emergency. At his request, the quartet asked its coach,
Royce Ferguson (www.revivalqt.com), to step in. Following a petition
of the Far Western District Board of Directors, PCQ was approved to
compete with a substitute. Prior to the start of the contest the quartet
decided that it was an unfair advantage to have a substitute of Royce’s
caliber and asked to be adjudicated only and not be part of the competition.
The quartet received scores that earned it 9th place in the district.
An announcement of PCQ’s unique situation and request to be excluded
from the finals competition was received with applause and positive
comments.

students will also have the rare opportunity to learn from some of Barbershop’s
best, as Kim Hulbert , Royce Ferguson and Tony L. Coe, Jr., M.A.Ed. will

Pacific Coast Harmony -- 2nd Place in SoCal East.
La Jolla Chorus debuts
contest set
May 10, 2003--Anaheim, CA
Pacific Coast Harmony (PCH) under the musical direction of Kim Hulbert,
competed in the Southern California Eastern Divisional contest and
finished in second position with 940 points, only 23 points behind
the crowd favorite and contest winner, Westminster's Harmony Showcase.
The performance package featured “Sentimental Gentlemen from Georgia” and “Once Upon a Time.” For some of the 43 members of PCH it was their first contest ever; for others, their first in as many as 20
years. With its second-place finish, PCH qualifies to compete this
October in the Far Western District (FWD) Fall Contest in Bakersfield,
Calif.
The contest choreography was created by the renowned Cindy Hansen, then reviewed and enhanced by Wayne Mendes of the Masters of Harmony. PCH’s high singing scores are attributed to the excellent musical combination of Kim Hulbert and Royce Ferguson.
PCH will also send one of its own chapter quartets, Pacific Coast
Quartet (PCQ), to Bakersfield. The quartet, after only two rehearsals,
sang well enough to qualify for competition at the FWD Fall Contest.
The quartet members are Mark Reich (Tenor), Allan Webb (Lead), Tom
Powell (Bari) and Mark Clement (Bass).
